  2. After all the snow this year I realized that my garden is very shaded,
since it took longer for it to melt.

I just can’t tell you enough how glad I am to have found you! And I will
absolutely be bugging you with questions – like now…lol. My husband & I
are wanting to build some sort of table-top raised bed for me (I am only
able to reach/work from waist height up). Without the ground under the
raised bed, how deep should we be planning the soil to be? And are there
other soil conditions we should adjust for? (And do I need to send my son
digging for worms?) Again, it is fantastic to have a ‘local’ to learn from,
    thank you!

  4. It’s great to see some of the snow is melting there! Ours is almost gone
and the forecast looks pretty good. Cute pup!

  7. You are spot on with the soil. It’s so important to use the right soil when
you start, the soil is like your bank, it will make or break the garden,
buying poor soil will result in a failure would completely discourage the
new gardener. In the beginning I spent hundred of dollars on Home Depot
soil, which basically equates to taking a couple hundred dollars and
burning it with a lighter. The soil was extremely heavy (I didn’t know at
the time that was a bad thing), have no nutrient or ability to hold water,
you could water it to death and it’ll by dry in no time. My family just
    laugh at my effort.

I think good soil can’t be purchased with money because even if you have
good amendment materials it takes time to build up and always improving. I
think a few months before someone even start gardening, before you even
plant anything, just concentrate on building the soil and making compost
    first.

Thank you. Have you written any books?

  17. @ 5:42… I was expecting “…the chances of you making a success of it is
minimal, and you’re likely to give up next year anyways ;-)”

  18. Excellent tips especially for new growers! If I ever see anyone wanting to
know about raised bed gardening I’ll send them straight to this video. Nice
to see that spring is soon approaching you Stephen :) Thank you for
    sharing.

  19. Raised beds are great for people with limited space, maximum yield in a
minimal area and beginners can get excellent results from even a small
    raised bed.

Stephen, I’m in north central Montana in zone 4. What raspberry varieties
    would you recommend? Thanks

    I like your dog.

I wouldn’t use cardboard or newspaper. A huge part of new papers made out
all kind of recycled paper what includes the “shiny” ones and other
unwanted contaminations (think about your household, how many times you use
paper to cleaning, painting etc.). During the process of making new paper
some of those bad staff remain in the new product.
