I live in a condo so not doing this currently- but a gray water system and
rain barrels is a couple more options. I heard the county of LA is giving
out free rain barrels to catch roof water- not sure if that’s still
happening? One thing I’ve heard of that seems easy enough is to put a
bucket in the shower to catch some of the water and using that to water-
might need to be careful what soaps and shampoos you use but that sounded
like an easy enough option. And of course the flushing less thing and not
running water except when necessary, only washing full loads of laundry,
etc.
I do get frustrated that home water use is only a small percentage of the
actual water use in our state, while factory farms and fracking operations
are exempt from water use restrictions and even water pollution regulations
like the clean water act. Ugh!

We keep a bucket in the shower to collect while we are rinsing our hair. We
do shut the water off while soaping up. Also making sure there is pearlite
in my soil. I place a terracotta pitcher and bury it in the soil next to
my plants and fill it with water. Also I fill wine bottles with water and
flip them upside down next to my plants on super hot days for my less
sturdy plants. I use the hose too, but I also use my watering can
on specific pots. I water early morning and late evening, to make sure the
sun does not quickly dry out my water. I love the mulch and do that
regular.. it helps me to water less.

I use the duck pond water on my trees, so I don’t feel so guilty when I
refill the pond. I’ve also started two rain barrels. Monsoon will be
starting soon, so hopefully they’ll fill up quick. I also use tons of
mulch.I’m planning a grey water system, and we take shorter showers. The
less we use to bath, the more I can use in my garden, lol.

Some good advice. I’m in a pretty wet climate, so water is not that sparse,
also because it’s much cooler here. However, I just returned from a 5 week
trip from LA to Utah, Arizona and Napa, of which only LA was really dry. My
brother in law is geologist for the city-counsel and he told me the city
was promoting or even making it mandatory to have “planter-boxes” made out
of concrete to have a retaining function for the rainwater and especially
the stuff that it has dissolved in it (run off from bituminous roofs,
exhaust & soot) and a way to absorb/break down/filter these substances, so
when it finally reaches the storm-drain and the LA river (;o)) into the
ocean, it is to some extend less polluted.
I am amazed that there is so little catchment while importing water from
all over CA and beyond. Anyway. I think LA gets about 13 inch of rain
normally, only the last 4 years it is even less. Is there maybe a
possibility to have some swales in your front-garden ? Just a thought ;o)

I live in North Orange County, Ca. I checked C. L. daily for free wood
chips. Found a tree trimmer that will deliver for free in the area he is
working. Wood isnt finely chipped but its free. I have covered my entire
front yard. The other option is to call tree services and ask if they give
away free mulch. The only drawback is you have to pick it up yourself.
FOR TOMATOES TAKE A 2 LITRE BOTTLE CUT THE BOTTOM OFF DIG A HOLE BY THE
PLANTS PUT BOTTLE IN THE HOLE 3/4 PUT SOIL ARROUND BOTTLE FILL WITH WATER
WITH WATER AND FERT. SOLUTION ROOTS GROW TO THE WATER. NO END ROT. GOOD
LUCK, TRY IT..
We also let our front yard go, just can’t waste the water.. The few times
it’s rained, we have actually caught the runoff.. Looking forward to the
rain coming to catch more. My husband, also has us using a 5 gallon bucket
in the shower, put it under the faucet until the water heats up & we get
about 50 gallons a week just doing that, but my garden & Koi pond mean the
world to me.. We also save use the water from the water changes from the
pond, great & nutrient rich.. He is looking into grey water salvage for the
trees & flowers as well as hiding down the driveways & washing cars..

Getting rid of the grass is a great idea. Can you use greywater? Like the
water from washing up or is that too greasy/dirty for the plants? I’ve
never needed to try it. But wait at the end is that a water feature you’re
sitting next to?
