I have been champing at the bit to get into cold frame gardening, just got
into my first house late last year. I moved from a Townhome with a condo
asso. whom frowned at my enclosed patio with the raised garden beds I put
in. Now I can enjoy gardening year round here in Illinois.. can’t wait!
    Thank you for sharing

  2. This is amazing. I’m in your area. For sure I will try this.

  3. Thanks for the video. For me winter gardening isn’t worth the effort. I can
grow enough micro greens (sunflower in particular) for myself indoors
without messing with all the cold frames, tunnels and snow and cold.

I really like this idea , can I get away with this in central Minnesota. Im
in between zone 3 and 4. Could I build a poly tunnel with several cold
    frames inside ?

Most of that stuff you mention grows really well for me in the middle of
winter, even out in the open. I live in victoria australia, it does get
cold here at night, but nothing like the temps you would get.

probably goes down to -3.c or 28.F. greens grow so much better for me in
winter, as the hot aussie sun just cooks em.

gets cold here i am going to build this and use it i am trying to counter
the short summers here and provide more good food for my family

Im in SE Iowa and have read Eliots books but this is the first year i have
acess to a small hoophouse. My plants are quite small, but Im hoping for a
warm fall. Do you think wire wickets with remay are best or wire or pvc in
a hoop over plants as the second layer? Also do you know how to repair
    small tears?

  9. Feeling Motivated! Thank you!

  10. let me apologize for the comment earlier, on another video, I made about
growing tree collards after seeing these vids about what you deal with in
Chicago I feel real dumb for making that comment to you. Obvioulsy you know
what can and can’t grow in your growing zone. thnx for sharing. I get a lot
from your videos. I am new to gardening. I plan on growing my kale and
collards that have sprouted and ready to go in the ground. I am going to
let my Red Malabar play out to the end. I’m hoping it will reseed itself
heavily. It did really good this year and hoping next will even be better,
    and with better trellising.

  11. Hi Patrick. Thanks for all your great information. This helped me to think
about where to place my winter garden with the sun being low during the
winter months. This will be my first winter garden. I am excited.

  12. thanks for the video.. I think I might be interested…

  13. Hi my name is Morad. Thanks loads for your video : it helps a lot newbies
like me to finally get started :) I am planning to plant my first winter
garden here in Cagnes sur mer (South East of France). The climate here is
mediterranean (mild, no snow in winter) and I am wondering what to plant.
Also, I am considering whether or not to build a small greenhouse. Could
you please help ? Merci beaucoup :)

  14. I’m not yet even new to winter gardening, having only a few dead summer
gardens in my past. This looks awesome! I have subscribed and look forward
to more instruction and good ideas.

grow my first winter garden this year buy not sure what to plant and when

    video

  17. Late Autumn (2013) I planted spinach, onions, carrots, and lettuce just
after Thanksgiving in northern Ohio. Under 4 mil poly raised bed in a sunny
but protected spot. After minus 20 degrees for several days in Feb. to my
surprise most plants made it and by mid March I was having spinach salad. I
have plans this winter to add a couple of rocks to absorb more heat for
overnight. Thanks for the “cool” video.

  18. I’m in Michigan, and would love to start a winter garden. Thanks for your
    vid. Great information.

  19. I am fairly sure this is my 4-5 time watching this episode! I am going to
have to find the 4 seasons growing book to plan our my fall and winter
    garden!

This winter has been extremely cold, we’ve had -15. This is not normal for
us at all. I have an unheated hoophouse and my veggies are still growing, a
bit of frost bite, but still alive. I’ve never tried to grow during the
winter, but wanted to see if I could. I want to do more next year.

  21. Tony Velada says:

    Great info, thanks for sharing!

have you considered an indoor aquaponics system for winter growing? I’ve
been growing the last 2 years in my basement. I’m in Orland Park and this
winter has been brutal. I grew basil, lettuce, swiss chard and peppers
    indoors.

also check out The Plant in the south side of Chicago.

lastly, I run an aquaponic meetup group. We would love to have you as a
guest speaker if you are interested.

  25. Some years here the winter temp drops only to the upper 20s for short
periods. but some years like this one it will drop into the teens every
night for a week. My green house is basically a stand in cold frame. tht I
keep my tomatoes and basil in during the summer because they need the extra
warmth in this marine climate. I planted bokchoi in the ground next to the
window in September I have been harvesting the outer stalks steadily but
the larger ones softened during the cold snap from freezing but I used them
immediately and the inner laves continued to grow into stalks. The basil
had already died but the tomatoes were loaded with green tomatoes which I
brought into the house to ripen. Some had frozen so I used them up green
but I still have one yellow tomato and three little romas ripening in my
    bowel.
My winter potato experiment Was to use the middle third of the plastic
barrels I use for planters as a ring in the back of the greenhouse planting
the potatoes just below the surface and adding dirt to the ring as they
grew. after the dirt reached the top the vines continued another two feet
into the walkway and I had to tie them up. The vines froze during the cold
snap and It is two weeks later so I pulled the vines off and the ring and
raked soil off the top of the pile until I had enough potatoes for supper.
Beginning of Feb. I will put the ring outside with a plastic cover and
plant the small potatoes for my summer crop.
